These old-fashioned British treacle buns are delicious little cakes that are ideal for enjoying along with a nice cup or tea, coffee or chilled glass of plant milk.No frosting or icing is required for treacle buns as they are packed with the humble flavours of cinnamon, ginger, caramelly treacle and sweet sultanas.
Preheat the oven to 160 Fan / 180 C / 350 Fahrenheit / Gas 4.
Add a paper cupcake case to each cup within the muffin baking tray. Or if non-stick rub in a little vegan margarine or butter to each cup instead of a paper case.
Sieve the flour and baking powder into a mixing bowl.
228 grams plain flour, 2 teaspoon baking powder
Stir through the salt, cinnamon and ginger powders.
Add the margarine in small blobs. Using your finger tips rub the margarine into the flour mixture until is resembles fine breadcrumbs.
115 gram vegan margarine
Stir through the sugar and sultanas.
115 gram sugar, 75 gram sultanas
Mix the black treacle through the plant milk.
2 tablespoon black treacle, 9 tablespoon plant milk
Pour into the mixing bowl and stir everything together.
Divide the mixture between the cupcake cases.
Please note: Just before opening the oven door turn the heat down to 150 Fan / 170 C / 325 Fahrenheit/ Gas 3.
Bake on the middle shelf, for 18-22 minutes or until risen, firm and a skewer comes out clean. [Fan ovens may take a few minutes quicker to cook so check the buns after 18 minutes to check for doneness.]
Leave for a few minutes within the baking tray before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.

Store treacle buns within a food container or cake tin/bread bin, or within a food/bread bag for up to 4 days. Older treacle buns can be refreshed within a warm oven for a few minutes.
Treacle buns can be frozen for 3-4 months. Treacle buns defrost at room temperature really quickly.
Having a batch of treacle buns in the freezer is perfect for sharing with unexpected or expected tea or coffee guests!
Sultanas can be replaced with raisins or currants.
Instead of ginger and cinnamon powder, replace with mixed spice powder, pumpkin spice powder, apple pie spice powder or a similar spice powder blend.
If black treacle is difficult to source use golden syrup or molasses instead.
